High Desert Test Sites 2015: Green River
Bennett will spend the weekend weaving two large hammocks using a modified, somewhat impractical backstrap loom technique. The weaving is performed in the place that the hammock will occupy, slowly filling the void between two trees. The hammocks will be made from locally sourced rags, fiber remnants, and foraged plants, along with cast-off materials from the local farming, ranching, and tourism industries. Visitors are encouraged to take a turn on one of the looms, learn a basic weaving technique, help rip fabric, make conversation, and relax by the river.
